Notes of French Revolution Class 9

Then there was a war of people against the aristocracies all over Europe. A large number of people decided that the revolution had to be carried further as the current constitution gave political rights to only the richer member of the society. They formed political clubs where they can discuss government policies. The most successful club was St Jacob Club in Paris. Woman formed their own club.

Their leader was Maximillien Robespierre. They wore long striped trousers to set themselves apart from the Nobles who wore Knee Breeches. They came to be known as sans-cullotes meaning those without knee breeches.

Newly Elected Assembly Convention

On 10th August 1792 Jacobins killed the king's guard and held the king himself as a Hostage for several hours. Later the Assembly voted to imprison the royal family.
Elections were held and now all men above 21 years of age were allowed to vote. Louis XVI was sentenced to death by a court on the charge of treason. France was declared a Republic.

The Reign of terror 

The period from 1793 to 1794 is referred to as the reign of terror in France. All those whom Robespierre considered as an enemy of the republic including ex-nobles and clergy, Member of parties and even number of his own party who did not agree with his method were arrested and tried by a Revolutionary Tribunal.

If the court found them guilty, they were guillotined (mass execution by simultaneous beheading). Peasants were forced to transport grain to the cities and sell it at the prices fixed by the government. The use of expensive white flour was forbidden. Robespierre followed his policies so brutally that his supporters in the end left him. He was finally connected by a court in July 1794.

The Fall of Jacobins, made it easier for the middle classes to get the power. A new Constitution was introduced which denied vote to non-propertied men. Often director clashed with each other. All this political instability leads to the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Women in France

Women in France were disappointed with the constitution of 1791 which reduce which denied Right to vote for women. To express their own views and demands, they started their own political clubs and newspapers. The society of Revolutionary and Republican women was the most famous club.

The abolition of slavery

Greatest social reform made by the jacobin government was to abolish slavery in French colony.

Beginning of slave trade

The French needed workers for plantation in These areas but the European did not want to work in the Far unknown land. This gave rise to a three way trade in slaves between Europe, Africa and America in the 17 century. This was known as triangular slave trade.

Conclusion 

In 1804, Napolean Bonaparte crowned himself as the emperor of France. He introduced many laws such as the protection of private property and a uniform system of weights and measures provided by the decimal system. He was finally defeated in the battle of Waterloo.
